The hard fact is that you must transact. This creation is built on two actualities. One is Contrast and the other is Reciprocity. Inevitably you transact and live through the contrasts. This is the reality of reciprocity. Everybody is in need of creature comforts. There is a drive within to get conveniences. People want to dominate. They need resources. But then, how to measure the effort and exertion? How to calibrate the necessary output of burden, load and pressure on the individual? Have you heard of the anecdote? Some people live so that they can eat but yet, many other people eat, so that they can live. All accumulation of property and joy toys are all for what purpose? The purpose of these infrastructures is to enable the pursuit of happiness. You have tools for analysis, assessment and evaluation. But have you overestimated the worth of these tools? A thorough study of these criterions can bring you, to its own limits. Yes, they have limitations.
The environment, events and situations, the eco system, habitat and family are five dimensions that shaped your mind. Your thought process is moulded by the impact of these five classifications. In addition to these, there is a sixth factor. That is your own routine and your personality. One must get the sharp intelligence to dissect and decipher these six moulds that grips your behaviour.
Example 1: Let me illustrate. On a single road, I was driving at sixty km per hour, in my car and in front of me, is this motor cycle. A scooter. A pillion is the lady, driven by a man of about fifty years of age. Very slow, probably at speed of about forty km per hour. The scooter just would not give me a space of side, to overtake. They rode as if, least concerned about the other road users.
Example 2: On many highways in India, it can be seen, how vehicles come towards you, from the wrong side. They have no guilt to enter an onward road and drive in opposite direction. Are they ignorant, of the dangers they pose, to other road users? These are not negligence. This behaviour is a deliberate case of selfishness – that only I need to be successful and happy. I must protect my interest, even if it is at the cost of other people. That the individual can usurp the advantages, even though unfairly encroaching on another person’s property. Therefore, such behaviors of utter selfishness is unethical. Ethical behavior can be defined as “Do not do unto others, that which you do not wish, it comes upon yourself”. But when selfishness dominates, then one survives by a predatory or parasitic logic of survival.
Human beings are driven so as to give an output of work. They need education to decide to segregate the work as progressive, or as regressive or if it is upward and forward, or they need to know if the work is detrimental. The personal growth cannot happen without collective and social development.
Simply because humanity cannot flourish within confines of isolation. Human being by nature is a creature of community. Therefore, uplifting community is the responsibility of each individual. So we cannot avoid transaction and reciprocity. Non participation in transaction is avoidance of the due accountability. This amounts to abdication of a sense of ownership. In effect, apathy to responsible action.
Many people are enthusiastic and energetic to transact. But then, the actions outreach and trade must be judicious. The two emotions that are the basis of action are greed and fear. If there is any excess in either greed or fear, then there are consequences. What will creep in and infiltrate into the system? The three deteriorations. They are contamination, corruption and corrosion. The system that is built for progressive work, will collapse under the weight of these three adulterations.
The contrasts are natural. If a garden of flowers is left unattended, then weeds will thrive. The weeds will kill nourishment that is meant to be used by the flower. Flower that does not get care, protection and nurturing will get dismantled. The beauty of flower will be the victim. Similarly, it is warranted that each individual has vigil and diligence towards method of their work.
You have a mandate to be alert, to enforce ethics and human values in behaviour of colleagues and co-workers. Potential decay and rot into the system must be sanitized. Your focus must shift from reaction to problem, to the next level. That is, proactively anticipate or articulate, types of problems that can arise. And then identify these potential snags that can show up later. Neutralize this criminality of behaviour in the beginning itself. The useful adage is “to nip it in the bud”.
There must be no compromise on scrutiny, to discover any malafide intentions in people. Because, to secure sanctity of honesty in transaction, is your moral responsibility. Identify vulnerability and gullibility, to become short changed and hoodwinked. The nature is full of contrasts. Therefore, the thieves and cheats are also earnestly seeking opportunity to devastate you. But then, you are equipped with intelligence.
Do not have apathy to your intelligence. Keep your intellect sharp and incisive. Constantly strive to upgrade and update your programs for training and for learning. Consider this assumption. Two workers in your department. One has borrowed some money from the other. There was a verbal or written agreement. Their transaction was also based on their familiarity, therefore they trusted each other. So there was a promise from the borrower to the lender to repay within a month’s time duration. Now six months later, borrower has breached promise. They have approached you for your verdict, a solution. Explain your method of intervention.
The ability to counter unethical practices is paramount. There is a contract to abide by rules. People who comply with legitimate agreements will earn respect. Their way to wealth has inherent risks. The way to wealth can be slippery at times. But yet, the appetite to stay on and in correct steps will give dividends. Victory may be slow or delayed but ethical behaviour will ensure happiness in long term. At all costs, do avoid, falling down the downward spiral.
Newspapers have numerous facts of the people who rose up quickly through economic ladder but were subjected to mighty fall from glory. Why to run the path of unethical procurement and embezzlement, when it is only to result in a fall from a taller height. At all costs, your stickiness to ethical behaviour alone, indicates the depth and height of your maturity. Aim at a bigger target. To be rewarded for morally correct transaction. To be awarded for the ethically compliant behaviour. Be remembered as an advocate of Human Values. Get wealth in the sustainable method.
It is easy to coordinate events, when you are at the top of the situation. All people want to get to the top. Ethical behaviour is the strength in your steps. If the step under your foot is weak, then better not, do an unethical jump. Ensure, there is no erosion of strength, from under your feet. Only, by method of surefootedness, can you be consistent, at the top.
