Johnson is a worker at a factory. He has some responsibility of technical work. He sits in a swanky office space and is accountable for upkeep of stationary. There is a call from the supervisor at the factory floor. He alleges that Johnson did not change the machine oil yesterday. If Johnson was hands-on on the machine tool, then, he would have known that delay in oil change would delay the production next morning. Overlooking what has to be done the next morning or even foretelling the requirement of tools for the work of next week, is an essential skill. Many a times, factories and offices lose precious time when the staff are ill prepared to plan for the next day.
The HR department scrutinized such negligent behavior and dereliction from many workers. A survey and an internal study gave new insights. In their domestic targets of house weddings, birthday celebrations or even picnics, the same staff did not show any omission at the time of preparation. Every little detail was incorporated into the preparation and plan. When the event, situation or function is personal to the candidate, there he gives meticulous attention to every detail. He delivers accurate forecasting of the need of infrastructure and other resources. This ensures that his personal function achieves certain amount of perfection of time and other deliverables. So the expert has to analyze this behavior and then diagnose the lethargy and apathy.
There is a need for a specific hidden skill. The worker should never realize that he is in effect doing exactly what the management is compelling him to do.
It is certainly a lack of identification with the project. The worker does not take accountability because he may not be the proprietor. He may lack a personal interest and involvement. But then, at his home, things are different. The new maid in the house would bring the morning tea at 7am. I told her I want it served with three toasts. She went up to get the toast while I finished the tea. On arrival of bread, there is no tea to go with it. You know that one can finish three toasts while another is being prepared. In short, the maid never got it right to serve hot tea along with the toast. This went on for a week. Then, one day, arrived her brother. She was at the door to receive him. Hot water for bath, soap and towel was kept ready at the same time. It was not that the maid could not understand or calibrate the tea and toast. It is just that the arrival of her brother was a personal task while serving tea and toast was considered official. Isn’t it again a matter of proprietary? The solution is not easy. The management has to train the worker to change their attitude. Management has to create new communication content. The training program must have activities and processes. The objective is to align the worker with the aspiration of the company. Can the worker be made to experience some ownership over the task that he delivers for the company? Good management will be able to create ecosystem, environment and other infrastructures so that the worker is inspired to achieve the same result as wanted by management.
An informed worker is a good asset to any boss. The trained one brings happiness to the entire workforce and to customers. But a willing specialist brings enjoyment to all stakeholders.
There is a need for a specific hidden skill. The worker should never realize that he is in effect doing exactly what the management is compelling him to do. The management must have a skill of discrete operation. The worker is simply supported and guided by a hidden hand. That hidden hand is effectively suggesting to the worker to continue to want to do that what the management wants to accomplish. The software worker is converted that the target has become the want of the worker. Only then, the aspiration of the two parties has blended into one.
Certainly, the trainer of such programs has to have patience. The workers must experience that they are cared for throughout their training. The communication method must have great appeal to the worker because of its simplicity and authenticity in delivery. The leaders, administrators and management must all be seen as walking together in a common endeavor. An informed worker is a good asset to any boss. The trained one brings happiness to the entire workforce and to customers. But a willing specialist brings enjoyment to all stakeholders.
Johnson allowed himself to be exposed to this training program. The transformed worker was the first candidate to be chosen in time of promotion. His performance became a case study. It is not surprising then that Johnson was given stock options. In effect he is a part owner of the company now. The house maid too has learned to take the work seriously. She recommended that her brother be retained to take care of the garden in the same villa. The talent of any management will be to know the art of blending its workers to one single aspiration.
