You must have felt complications when you attempted something that is very simple. Eating an ice cream can sound very simple to a six year old. But to an adult, the processes involved in the manufacture and procedure by which it arrives on your tongue, can become complex. Almost everything that is simple seem to be laced with tyranny of commerce and brutality of politics. Many tell of times when they were children at school where home, playground, school, teachers, friends and parents were few categories that could contain the whole world. But if you categorize and itemize your activity for one day, you can invent over a thousand titles. The current fixation is to be successful in each one of these thousand items. Generation of wealth, protection of resources, need to cause pain on other people and being visible on magazine covers, all are indicators of success. Fitting into a social mold and career standards are the normal. Even relationships are mandated. So where is the relief? Let us categorize all of the above narrative into a bucket called narrow.
Can we open up any one of these items from its narrow sense to a broad meaning? Just imagine that two people has extremely different needs. How can those two people enter one relationship with the objective to satisfy their distinct needs? Look at Valentine’s Day
where people get into one single relationship so as to satisfy multiple and different objectives. therefore the idea of relationship has to convert itself from a narrow bond into a broad level of acceptance.
This generation is certainly in the time of revolution. People have decided that children can become educated in numerous disciples of their own choice
This child is celebrating her fifth birthday. It is at this time that the neighborhood gave verdict that the child must be put to school. The previous generation obeyed this diktat. By the age of six, every child is regimented in the classroom of grade one. Needless to say, at age of ten, every child in a single uniform is in grade five. At the age of fifteen, in India, every child must submit themselves to be examined by Central Board of Secondary Education.
The trend is to move out of narrow fixations to broader ideas. The future will be governed by ideas.
But then evidently, things are changing. In the new generation, children have multiple options in the field of education. I know many parents that have chosen to give home tutoring for their children. This generation is certainly in the time of revolution. People have decided that children can become educated in numerous disciples of their own choice. Over a thousand methods of education and literacy has received social recognitions. The trend is to move out of narrow fixations to broader ideas. The future will be governed by ideas. Though it is fair to have principled positions in behavior, yet it is not wise to have rigid mindsets and narrow fixations. In the past the interviewer would ask the question – “What do you do?” But today, the question to the interviewee is – “What are the things that you can do?” In the past generation, a CEO of a company would be expert in one industry and would be posted in one country. In the year 2020, there will be CXOs who will be expert in more than two or three products at the same time. These CXOs will be charged to care for the products in more than three countries simultaneously. We are arriving at a time where we have to redefine our understandings about success. Your parents would have mastered one subject and would adhere to it as their career. The buzzword of this millennium is serial careerist. You are welcome to procure any number of careers that you wish to do. They need not conform in style or in substance to one another.
It is important to know your purpose. What is the kind of work that you blend into with ease? Many times, our direction to the job or a role is very narrow. What is the way to broaden the vision to our target? Seers of the past coined a terminology called meditation. Breathing techniques and practice of yoga made claims that you can get close to who you are. That you can get intimate to the depth of the mind. That your intensity of discovery about you, can tell you the more suitable work that you can do. But those are for people who practice meditation.
The buzzword of this millennium is serial careerist.
Then there are us, who simply know that we have to work. Success is for those who have scholastic aptitude. They have to be certified by colleges, institutions and universities. Social institutions must recognize contributions of the individual. Only then a company will recruit him for a job. But how can you confine to this mainstream? The serial careerist has worked in many fields. He explored more than others. He accumulated exposures. Now he is qualified. Though out of the mainstream, yet, he can articulate his own mold. He can now define the shape that he has taken over many decades of sheer work and struggle. Now he boldly stands out of the mainstream. The serial careerist is confident to pronounce his journey and his current status. His skills and talent is of utility to scholastically successful people. Though standing apart, this renegade of a fugitive, is wholesome. This branching out is essential in society. Every branching out finally arrives at a new profession or trade. Every branching off will give rise to newer transactions. Nature needs newer and fresher entities. It is important to have adversaries or opposition to be able to interact and then to merge. We can call these as horizontal migrations.
Success is to broaden your understanding and range of activity.
I got this thought process from the Indian heritage. I want to use here this phrase – vertical migrations. I went through the chapters on Baalyam, Koumaram, Grihastam, Vanaprastam and Sanyasam. These are five status in your journey of living. All relationships are bound by these rules. Until end of Grishastam, there is relevance to much activity of romance. It is important to graduate to Vanaprastam at about age fifty-five. This is when you graduate out of Grihastam and start experiencing accountability to the entire society. From then on, at near age seventy, you are mandated to shed of your history and past and move on to self-discovery through a procedure called Sanyasam. The techniques are there for you to shed your narrow idea about academics, career and success. Maturity demands that you learn to exit entanglement founded on narrow relationships. The idea of mainstreaming of life in itself can be judged as narrow mindedness. The future trend is to broaden your imagination. Every individual has a role and significance. Career, job descriptions may be outside the confines of mainstream. The internet is only a beginning. Internet has opened many a shackles of tradition and confines of culture. Internet has made possibilities for every single individual to connect to a broader understanding of topics of global significance. It is wise to move from narrow perspectives to broader perceptions. Don’t let the world turn back to take a peep at you. Beware from being left out. Success is to broaden your understanding and range of activity. Welcome to the big world. Its really simple.
